In a previous blog titled ‘Great Retro TV Shows of the 90s – Frasier’ we looked in detail at why Frasier was such a good show. As we have more than a passing interest in TV shows, we thought we would look more TV Shows throughout the decades, from the 80s to today, as a 4 part blog series. In this blog, we will look at one of our favourite shows of the noughties, which is Peep Show.
Peep Show was first broadcast on Channel 4 in 2003. The show was created by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain. Before they wrote Peep Show, their material featured was sketch shows that included Smack the Pony and they wrote for the children’s shows The Queen’s Nose and My Parents Are Aliens.
The sit-com Peep Show focuses on the lives of Mark and Jeremy who are a couple of twenty-something room mates who don’t exactly have much in common. Mark, on the face of things, is an average person. He has an okay job in an office, attained 7 GCSEs, did his A Levels and went to University. However, Mark is anything but normal, he is almost psychotically plagued with social paranoia, which makes him act peculiarly.
Jeremy, on the other hand, is extremely sociable, but that’s where his good points start and finish. He is often unemployed, naive, selfish and does not care what people think about him. Together they rub each other up the wrong way and get into avoidable scrapes. Despite irritating each other, no one in their right mind would want to live with either Jeremy or Mark, so they have to rely on each other.
The script to Peep Show is fantastic, fast paced and controlled, most of the scenes fly by in a stream of social awkwardness and hilarity. It’s unusual filming quality and creative first person camera angles make it simply unique in style and weirdly wonderful in every way possible. The dark dialogue and Seinfeld–esque intricate plot lines make Peep Show a must watch!
