Holographic displays make use of light diffraction in order to create virtual, 3D imagery of an object without requiring the aid of 3D glasses. This technology allows for holographic television display technology, which the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is developing.
Can you picture sitting on your couch and watching a film that surrounds you and makes you feel as if you were part of it? The images move all around you as if they are jumping from the TV screen instead of lying flat on it. Well, in the near future, you might be able to do just that.
3D Holograms
At the University of Arizona, optical scientist Nasser Peyghambarian and his team are researching technology that will allow for the development of 3D holograms. The National Science Foundation, or NSF, is supporting the project that hopes to one day provide this technology for every home in the world.
Modern televisions aren’t able to process the video transmission necessities that holograms require, which is around 10,000 times more the amount of bandwidth the TV in your living room currently requires. The Center for Integrated Access Networks, or CIAN, is utilising the combined research from multiple institutions in order to develop optical technologies capable of bringing holograms to reality.
The BBC’s Holographic TV
Through the use of modern technology, the BBC has been able to develop a simple form of hologram similar to some seen in famous sci-fi films. The BBC’s interest in holographic TV for their audiences can be traced back to the 1970’s; the company is investing in emerging technologies that will provide a more immersive TV viewing experience.
The holographic TV consisted of a 46” screen with acrylic panels on top of it, in the shape of an inverted pyramid. The result? A potential pathway into having holographic TVs in living rooms across the world sooner than we hoped! Even though the BBC classifies it as a modern-day version of an old Victorian theatre technique, it is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.
