How to Dress Super (Without the Cape)

The movie world seems to be awash with heroes flitting through the sky at the moment. From flight to extraordinary intellect, the powers these heroes possess put them in the way of bullets, bombs and the occasional damsel in distress on a daily basis. The costumes that they wear go through a lot because of this – it goes without saying that they are not machine washable. The clothes that go over the costume, however, are (in most cases, always check your labels!). So, emulating your favourite hero doesn’t have to make you the weirdo wearing a cape in the office.

Getting the style of these giants of the big screen and of course on the smaller screen with the aid of Electronic World couldn’t be easier, especially with the vastness of choice. Clark Kent

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s Superman!

Superman’s alter ego is the father of geek chic. This is a fashion trend which has been on the rise for some time now. The chunky glasses, combed hair and suits are all part of the ‘humble’ persona that the strongest man in the world shows to everyone except Lois Lane. But, where did the inspiration for this look come from?

“Clark Kent, I suppose, had a little bit of Harold Lloyd in him,” Joe Shuster, co-creator of the Man of Steel, once said. A comedian on par with Charlie Chaplin, his huge glasses were the main aspect of his ‘glasses character’ and gave the creators of Superman the idea of hiding an identity behind simple frames. Luckily big, geeky, frames are all the rage at your local Specsavers and shouldn’t be hard to come across. The resourceful, go-getter attitude of his character also inspired Clark Kent’s persona of a journalist and was perfectly in tune with 1940s America.

Of course, the Man of Steel has a baggier fit to his suits to hide those hulking muscles. You too may want to hide your strong physique from the rest of world, but chances are a more fitted suit will be the ideal choice for your geek attire. A smart tie is a great way to complete the look. Colour-wise, stick to the big guy’s love of red and blue, it’s a classic combo and looks great on almost everybody!

Tony Stark

This list wouldn’t be complete without a billionaire crime fighter in the ranks. Businessman, playboy and ingenious engineer, Iron Man’s alter ego has the style to match his high flying life.

In his movie portrayal of Tony, Robert Downey Jr. based his attitude and behaviour on Elon Musk, the real life billionaire entrepreneur. The personality change that Tony undergoes whilst held captive by terrorists, becoming more concerned with changing the world and making humanity more peaceful, is reflective of Musk’s own goals in his business SpaceX.

The styles of clothes that the titular Iron Man wears as his alter ego are also very reminiscent of Musk.

Sharp suits, cool shades and a meticulously groomed beard are the keystones for this ironclad style choice. Although it must be noted, Tony can also be practical in his style choices; “Drop your socks and grab your crocs, we’re about to get wet on this ride.” Okay… Maybe don’t heed his croc rocking advice. Those are never a good thing. Never.

Peter Parker

The quick wit and fast moves of this classic superhero have seen him swing into the hearts of many, with yet another Spider-Man adventure on the movie horizon to testify to his long-lasting popularity. Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to be the sixth movie outing for this superhero in the last decade. Has there been too much Spider-Man on our screens? Any true comic book fan will, of course, say that you can never have too much of a good thing.

No matter your opinion on Spidey’s movie career, the style of this hero is one which every man can achieve. The king of casual, the web slinger’s career as a photographer (and occasional pizza delivery boy) gives him the leeway – not to mention the budget – for a more casual style. So think a quality pair of jeans, semi-casual shirt and a light jacket to complete the outfit. There’s no rule that states casual can’t be smart after all!

So, leave the cape at home and emulate the more down to earth style of these super men after they clock off. They look good both in and out of spandex, and so can you!
