There have been many technological advances in home entertainment that have changed the industry forever. One of the biggest has been the change from video tapes to DVDs, as it enabled manufacturers to put more data onto the medium.
This also meant that there were no risks of the tape coming out or undone and becoming easily damaged as a result, and due to the small size of DVDs it also meant that a lot more could be stored in the same amount of space. The downsides have been that the discs can snap easily, and if they are not totally clean then there can be problems with how they play the data.
Another advance in technology that has had a big impact on home entertainment is the popularisation of games consoles. They have been steadily increasing in popularity since they were first created, and with the recent invention of the Wii have reached audiences that they never have before. The Wii has helped to bring gaming to families, the older generation and also has appeal with people that are not ‘serious’ gamers. In this way, it has helped gaming generally become more accepted in society, and the people who game not seen in such a negative light.
A technological advance that has been relatively recent is the introduction of LCD TV. Previously television screens, such as in the case of CRT TV screens, were inefficient, poor quality and lower definition. With the advent of high definition, LCD TVs have taken over the market and are slowly becoming standard.
