Is Resolution More Important Than Screen Size?

Although it might seem like common sense that a TV with a bigger screen size will have a better image, that’s not always the case. We run the risk of not being able to discern all the little details if our TV is too big for our room – especially if we end up sitting too close to it. However, if we’re sitting close to a TV with a higher resolution (like a 1080p) we will be able to enjoy more details, compared to a lower resolution (720p).

So, when choosing a brand new TV, should you focus more on the resolution?

Resolution and Size

Modern technology is all about large screens with crystal-clear images, but you’ve probably noticed that if you get too close to your TV, that clarity begins to dispel and you can only see a grid of pixels. If you walk backwards, the picture returns to its usual smoothness. Your screen has millions of these pixels, all densely packed together, which makes up the screen resolution – and which shows how many pixels can be displayed horizontally and vertically.

The size of a TV screen is measured diagonally and simply indicates how big or small the TV is. You can have big TVs with low resolutions, or smaller screens with a high 4K HD resolution.

Does Resolution Really Matter More?

You can also have different screen sizes with the same resolution. Imagine you have a 40-inch, a 42-inch and a 50-inch TV, each with 720p – this resolution means that an image would look better on the smaller screen, because it would merely appear bigger on a larger screen, not clearer. The same amount of pixels, then, are more densely packed on the 40-inch, compared to the others.

Lower resolutions on bigger screens are not as clear as higher resolutions on smaller screens – the higher the resolution, the better the image. If you have two screens of the same size with different resolutions, the one with the highest resolution will let you discern more details.

Still, even though it appears that resolution might be more important that size, when choosing the right screen you should take note of both the size and the resolution. This is because the image might be sharper with a higher resolution, but the elements on the screen will appear smaller. If you want them to appear bigger and in great detail, a combination of a large screen with a high resolution is the way to go.
