In our last blog we took a look at some of the greatest anti-heroes in TV history. Here in the latest instalment in our continuing series we take another look as some of TVs best anti-heroes, who epitomise our fascination with flawed characters and demonstrate that sometimes it’s good to be bad.
Jack Bauer, 24
Jack Bauer, played by Kiefer Sutherland, from the hit series 24 is another of TVs most memorable anti-heroes. Jack is a verifiable killing machine, skilled in a range of fighting methods and interrogation techniques, and is one of the most dangerous weapons in the US Government’s arsenal.
Whilst his actions might all be for the so-called ‘greater good’, his methods are irrefutably questionable, earning this complex character his anti-hero status. However, despite his tough exterior, Jack still longs for a normal life and to be with his family, which is why audiences cannot help but root for him to make it out alive and achieve just that.
Walter White, Breaking Bad
The best TV anti-hero in recent years has got to be Breaking Bad‘s Walter White and his name has become almost synonymous with the concept of an anti-hero. The character’s journey, from down-trodden chemistry teacher to hardened drug lord, captivated audiences across the world and is perhaps one of the most extreme anti-heroic transformations ever witnessed in modern TV history.
However, as the show progresses, there’s no denying that it becomes harder and harder to sympathise with Walt’s increasingly monstrous actions. Furthermore, whilst at first it’s rather easy to sympathise with his motivations, these also grow ever-more questionable in later episodes of the show. And it gradually becomes apparent that Walt’s devotion to his family is no longer his only motivation.
As such, unlike many other anti-heroes stories, Walter White’s narrative is more a tale of descent into evil, and by the time the show came to an end, many fans were left divided over the exact point Walt stopped being the anti-hero of the story and instead became the villain.
