LG Throws Us a Curve Ball

A press release from LG Yesterday announced the release of the world’s first CURVED Screen OLED TV. The 55 inch screen (54.6 inch diagonal when the curve is taken into account) is an OLED type at just 4.3 millimetres thick – or thin as LG prefer to call it.

OLED – What’s That Then?

If you’ve not heard the acronym OLED before, it is short for Organic Light Emitting Diode. OLED screens differ from conventional LED screens. They do not need a back light to make the image visible. Instead the Carbon based diodes generate their own source of light which allows for a more natural and accurate picture colour.

What are the Benefits of OLED Displays?
The most obvious advantage of back light free displays is that they can be created much thinner than conventional backlit LED screens. LG have taken this one step further by assembling a display on a flexible plastic material that can be curved rather than the traditional glass surface. As I mentioned earlier, OLED screens also deliver a more accurate and natural colour profile.

Why Have a Curved Screen?
LG say the curved screen offers a similar effect to an IMAX cinema screen. They have spent a long time researching the curvature of the screen to get the optimum experience. In short, it looks as though this will be the future of 3D TV in the home – though I’m not sure how it would look if it were wall mounted.

Its 4.3 mm ‘Thin’. Where are the Speakers?
My first thought when I saw the unit thickness of 4.3mm was it must need a separate AV system to deliver the sound. Incredibly LG have included speakers in the base of the unit; transparent ones! I’m not even sure what materials can be used to make speakers of this kind.

I’ve got to admit that I’m highly sceptical of the LG claims that the TV provides high quality sound. The sound quality of ordinary LED TVs suffer from the small speaker units that are installed in them and I can only imagine this TV will be similar.

When Can I Get One?

Not for a while yet. At the moment LG are taking pre-orders in South Korea only. Then, there’s matter of the asking price; its release price in the South Korea converts to a whopping £8,500!.
