New technology is always exciting, impressive and expensive, and LG have made no exception with the recent unveiling of their 55” OLED (organic light emitting diode) Television.
OLED technology has been sampled before, but only in small scale devices, with screens being around 11” big. The increase to a 55” display is a massive jump, offset by the fact that the set is only 4mm thick (around half the depth of an iPhone) it looks more like a picture to hang rather than a television set.
The shocking price tag for the LG set is £8,000 on pre order, which is expected to be shipped in the last quarter of 2012. As with HDTV and 3DTV sets, the first on the market are always expensive, due to new technology costs and lack of competition. When the technology increases in popularity and more companies start producing the sets, prices will plummet, just as HD and 3D sets have before them.
The OLED technology uses individual light sources for each pixel, creating vivid colours and deep blacks. The 0.02s response rate is also said to be 100 times faster than current TVs, creating excellent graphics for gamers and regular viewers. Due to the nature of the OLED technology, the screen is viewable from every angle, good on paper, but most people tend to sit in front of a television set rather than side on.
The increased competition is great news for consumers, as Samsung have been leading the way with smart TVs, the increased competition from LG should be a great way to decrease prices on the high street.
