So, you’ve taken advantage of one of our incredible cheap TV deals and picked up a fantastic new television – perfect for binge-watching the first 4 seasons of Game of Thrones or hooking up a console for some serious video game action. Sounds good, but if you really want to make the most out of your TV then there’s one more thing you need to sort out, and that’s where you’re going to put it! If this is something that you’ve never given a moment’s thought to in the past then it’s time to start, because TV placement can be absolutely crucial for ensuring that you’re getting the optimum viewing experience.
Why does it Matter?
Whether you’re using a stand or hanging your TV on the wall, there are a number of factors you need to think about. The first is comfort – a television that’s too high up can leave you craning your neck and straining your eyes, never pleasant and potentially damaging in the long term. For the vast majority of people, it is far more comfortable to choose a spot which allows you to look very slightly downwards when you’re watching your favourite flicks.
You also need to think about reflections – those rogue rays of light that can easily ruin the whole viewing experience by obliterating the screen. The easiest way to combat this is simply by ensuring that your screen is never placed on the wall opposite a window. Where you choose to place your TV can also have an effect on the quality of the picture, as sitting too close to the screen will often lead to images that look unclear.
Where’s Best?
You might have seen a trend catching on for hanging TVs directly about the fireplace in a living room. Sure, it looks great – but technically it’s not the greatest idea for your comfort or your eyes. This goes back to what we were saying about height; ideally the bottom of the screen should never be placed higher than eye level, and if you have to go above the fireplace then the screen is being forced further up the wall than it needs to be.
So where should you put it instead? In the modern age TVs work fantastically as the centrepiece of a living room, so one great option is to choose a reasonably empty (non-window facing) wall that needs spicing up and give your television the chance to really make itself seen.
Of course, you’re not limited to one room – if your kitchen is a lively hub of activity then the TV can work just as well there or, if you have the space, a dedicated TV room can help you to keep your living room a social, family space. When it comes to seating, the ideal distance to leave between the couch and the screen can be worked out with one simple formula: 2.75 times the screen size.
Spice Things Up
So far we’ve dealt with the more conventional ways to position your TV, but what if you’re looking for something slightly more unusual? There are loads of great ways to spice your design up, whether you decide to go high tech and use a high tech gadget such as a motorised mount, or keep it classic – one fantastic design we saw recently used an old-fashioned pull down map to cover the screen when it was not in use. From mounting a TV inside a cupboard or cabinet, to getting around the height problem entirely by actually placing it inside an unused fireplace, your imagination is the limit!
