Recent years have seen the growing rise of a rather strange new breed of television series, namely TV shows that are based on movies. Here we give a guide to some movie classics that are currently making the transition to the small screen.
The Devil’s Advocate
The 1997 film The Devil’s Advocate, starring Al Pacino and Keanu Reeves, is a tense thriller combining supernatural chrills with some truly effective character exploration, to create a unique film about the high-flying legal world.
It was recently announced that American TV network NBC have ordered a pilot of the show and John Wells and Arnold Kopelson, who produced the original film, will reportedly develop the show.
Ghost
This film was a surprise hit for Paramount back in 1990, winning two Oscars and scoring legions of fans. Ghost is a rather surprising mix combining a variety of different genres, and stars Demi Moore, the late Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg – who won an Oscar for her role in the film – as a psychic helping Swayze’s character avenge his untimely death.
According to a number of reports, a prospective television series based on the movie may be in the works. Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner, who have worked on a number of successful series including Lost, have been asked to write a pilot for the series.
Shutter Island
Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island is a tense psychological thriller, full of twists and turns that keep you guessing right until the very end. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels, investigating the disappearance of a murderer believed to have escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane. All is definitely not what it seems with this film, and it’s worth watching for the climatic ending alone.
It was recently reported that the film is set to become a HBO TV series, and Martin Scorsese himself will direct the pilot episode. The project has, so far, tentatively been named Ashcliffe, after the hospital featured in the film and will reportedly be a prequel to the film, telling the back story of the asylum and its founders.
