It’s difficult to believe that television was once scoffed at by prestigious directors. Times have changed considerably, with the quality of TV shows such as True Detective having a cinematic quality. Speaking to the Independent, acclaimed director David Lynch sums up this shift in opinion perfectly by saying: ‘Television is way more interesting than cinema now. It seems like the art-house has gone to cable.’ It isn’t a surprise to see with this shift that classic movies are coming to the small screen. In this blog we will look into some exciting prospects of shows that were once movies:
The Truman Show
The Truman Show was released 16 years ago starring Jim Carrey and Natascha McElhone. The plot involved a man who is unaware that he is living in a reality show. It is believed that Paramount is producing this adaptation of Peter Weir’s movie, and apparently this project is still in development, with a script being currently written.
Fargo
The Coen Brothers’ masterpiece shocked and excited cinema goers back in 1996. Starring William H Macy as a desperate man who arranges for his wife to be kidnapped, there was only one way this movie was going to end. This 2014 revamp stars Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman (who has all but completely exorcised his ‘Tim from The Office’ tag). The series is set in small town Minnesota and promises to be just as violent and thrilling as the movie. The pilot aired in America recently and will come to the UK soon. ‘Aw jeez, here we go again.’
Goodfellas
Rumours of Goodfellas being made into a TV show have been circulating for years. It seems that the highly acclaimed movie is being picked up for the small screen by AMC. It has been reported that the film’s co-screen writer Nicholas Pileggi is on board for the show too. It is unknown when this series will be set and the cast has not been confirmed. It may be tough to find actors who can evoke the criminal lifestyle they way Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro did.
