With the release of the Bafta nominations yesterday, you may have been making a mental note of what you’ve seen and what you still want to watch. With the speed of Blu-ray and DVD releases following the cinema premieres closer and closer, it has never made more sense to have a home cinema so you can watch from the comfort of your own home.
Whether your money is on ‘Gravity’, ’12 years a Slave’ or even ‘American Hustle’ it seems unanimous at this stage that these are the hottest three films of the moment.
You must have seen adverts for ‘American Hustle’, even if you haven’t been to see it yet. The catchy soundtrack, a classic Led Zeppelin riff, is backed up with the glamour of the age. For a film involving gangsters it has surprisingly little violence, it is however also incredibly tense and full of twists. The heavy atmosphere is relieved by absurd moments of detail, often focused on the characters outlandish hair or some very silly mini performances from Jennifer Lawrence’s drama queen character. This might be one worth re-watching so look out for the DVD or Blu-ray so you can watch at home again and again on your new television.
If you missed ‘Gravity’ in the theatre and want to know what all the fuss was about, watching it at home might be your best option. It might even be more enjoyable from under a blanket if the thought of spinning around in space, with huge pieces of metal threatening to crush you and only a man at the end of radio for help, a little distressing.
If you’ve been waiting for ’12 Years a Slave’ you might be relieved to know it’s released tomorrow. However it doesn’t look like many theatres will be airing it particularly quickly. The British director, Steve McQueen, responsible for bringing Solomon Northup’s eponymous 1853 autobiography to the screen worked with a production team headed by Brad Pitt who also acts in the film. You may also recognise Chiwetel Ejiofor who is nominated for his performance in The Best Actor class, and look out for Benedict Cumberbatch.
