One of the main reasons that many people opt to purchase a high end LCD or LED TV for is playing video games. All of the latest video games consoles require the use of a HDTV in order for the player to experience the full extent of their high definition graphics, so many avid gamers are keen to upgrade their TVs to use with their Xbox or Playstation 3.
The three main video games consoles currently battling for market dominance, Playstation 3, Xbox and Nintendo Wii are extremely popular with consumers and these machines can be found in living rooms up and down the country. However, a new games console is set to hit the shelves in time for Christmas and the manufacturers are hoping it will dramatically change the way we play computer games.
The new ‘microconsole’ from OnLive will allow users to access a library of video games which are then streamed to the console via an online server. So, instead of buying physical hard copies of games from a shop users will simply be able to select the games they want to stream. By the end of the year OnLive hope to have a catalogue of 50 games for users to stream, including popular titles such as “Borderlands” and “NBA 2K11″.
If the new console from OnLive works out as planned then it stands a good chance of becoming popular with gamers who are often keen to embrace new technology. However, one concern about the new system that has been voiced is the worry that interruptions or a slow stream could result in lagging, frustrating game play.
With the new main three computer games companies already having such a stranglehold on the home video games market it’s unlikely that consumers will immediately warm to the new console from OnLive. For the mean time Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo needn’t worry about their customers unhooking consoles from their cheap Samsung TV and OnLive certainly have their work cut out for them if they want to gain a foothold in the market.
