If you’re feeling the TV show blues and need something new to watch, this year promises to deliver! 2017 might see some of the most beautifully striking TV shows with well-written scripts. Whether they’re adaptations or new stories, here are some of our predictions for 2017’s best new TV shows.
Emerald City
Based on L. Frank Baum’s book series, Oz, Emerald City is a modern take on the classic story of Dorothy. Set in the Land of Oz, it tells the tale of Dorothy Gale as she is transported from Kansas to the Land of Oz and tries to find the Wizard. Unbeknownst to her, she’ll fulfil a life-changing prophecy that will change the Land of Oz forever.
Taboo
Featuring Tom Hardy as the main character, Taboo is the story of James Keziah Delaney and how he built his shipping empire in the early 1800s. After living in Africa for 10 years, Delaney returns to London, where he faces off against the East India Company, Britain, and America.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Based on the children’s novel series by Lemony Snicket, A Series of Unfortunate Events follows the story of the three Baudelaire children after their parents died in a mysterious house fire. Narrated by Lemony Snicket (played by Patrick Warburton) the TV show features Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf.
Legion
2017 continues the trend of comic book adaptations to the little screen. Legion is based on a Marvel Comics story of David Haller. Haller was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was young, but an encounter with another psychiatric patient he starts to wonder if there is another explanation to what he experiences.
Powerless
This comedy TV show is set in the DC Comics Universe and it’s a different twist to what we’re used to when superheroes are involved. Instead of telling their lives, it follows an insurance company who covers regular people against all of the damages superheroes cause when they fight evil.
American Gods
This highly anticipated TV show is based on Neil Gaiman’s American Gods novel. It follows the recently released ex-convict, Shadow Moon, who meets a man named Wednesday when he’s on his way to his wife’s funeral. Shadow’s life changes when he finds out that Wednesday is, in fact, Odin, the Norse mythology God.
The Defenders
Joining all of the favourite Marvel TV heroes, The Defenders will see a collaboration between Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist as they fight crime in New York City. After the success of the individual TV shows, this new series has been long anticipated.
Star Trek: Discovery
Star Trek: Discovery is one of Bryan Fuller’s 2017 projects. The TV show will be set around ten years after the original Star Trek series and it will follow the crew of the USS Discovery. Their discovery of new worlds and new civilisations will revolve around a main incident that happened in Star Trek’s history but hasn’t been explored yet.
