My Cart - Ever since Matt Smith announced his departure from Doctor Who in June earlier this year, fans of the long running sci-fi series have been impatient to learn who his replacement will be. The wait is finally over: the Time Lord’s twelfth regeneration was unmasked on a live BBC1 programme yesterday evening, watched by 7 million viewers.
The latest incarnation will be played by Peter Capaldi, best known as foul mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in The Thick Of It. At 55 he’s the oldest actor to have held the role since William Hartnell, the original Doctor. He has been a fan of the show since childhood, writing into the Radio Times about it when he was fifteen.
“It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer,” Capaldi said; at one stage he wasn’t even allowed to tell his family. He revealed how he had originally learned he had been cast: he had been shooting The Three Musketeers in Prague, so he had put his mobile on silent. When he was finally able to pick up his phone, his agent broke the news by saying, “Hello, Doctor.”
Present incumbent Matt Smith has supported the choice, saying: “The casting of it made me really excited genuinely, and as a fan I think it’s a really good choice … it’s going to be a thrill.”
Although Capaldi’s name had been mentioned previously, the creative team hadn’t believed the timing was right. According to Steven Moffat, the lead writer and executive producer: “There comes a right time for the right person to play it. That moment has arrived… One of the most talented actors of his generation is going to play the best part on television.”
Capaldi will be making his first appearance as the 12th Doctor at the end of this year, as part of the 50th anniversary special.
