It seems that these days every company is keen to espouse their green credentials. The majority of firms seem to claim that they’re eco friendly and are eager to reduce their impact on the environment. However, this has been branded as cynical ‘greenwashing’ by companies keen to promote their brand by jumping on the green trend.
So, it’s little surprise that when Philips unveiled their new ‘green’ TV that there were a few raised eyebrows. Flat panel TVs are hardly known for being particularly forgiving when it comes to power consumption, however it seems that despite the initial scepticism Phillips have actually managed to produce a TV that could quite rightly be called ‘green’.
The new 42” TV from Phillips, The Econova, uses less that 40W when running in eco mode – that is less than an old style incandescent light bulb. This is quite an achievement particularly when you consider that some of the more power hungry TVs on the market, particularly cheap LCD TVs often use in excess of 300W.
Other eco friendly features that are exclusive to the Econova include a solar-powered remote control and a ‘zero power switch’ that completely disconnects the TV from mains so it consume absolutely no power unlike the standby modes on other TVs. Some good ideas eco-friendly ideas, but we’re not so sure about the solar-powered remote control as loosing it down the back of the sofa could become even more of a nuisance when you retrieve it and it has no charge.
The set is also manufactured using recycled materials and features a highly accurate light sensor to ensure that each LED that comprises the screen runs at optimum efficiency saving power and helping you to keep the electricity bill down.
In a time when we’re using an increasing amount of energy hungry electronic equipment then truly innovate energy saving appliances such as the Phillips Econova are likely to be welcome additions to many peoples’ homes.
