With a huge online market for technology which brings a huge amount of choice, consumers may find themselves asking the question of whether it is better to buy online or take the time to visit a store and check the product out for yourself.
Every year, more and more people choose to purchase their TVs online rather than in a store, and while there are still many benefits of the buying in store, it seems that buying online is the preferred method. Electronic world has all the facts, figures, pros and cons so you can decide on the perfect answer to this question the one that’s right for you!
The Survey Says…
A survey from GFK Global released interesting results and insights into what drives customers to purchase online versus in store. As a result of surveying 23,000 shoppers, the majority of the evidence suggests that online shopping presents more benefits when compared to shopping in store. However, in-store shoppers like the appeal of face to face interaction, instant gratification and the fact they may receive the product instantly. Here are the important factors driving the results:
Factors driving an online purchase and the percentage of people surveyed who agreed:
- Better pricing, deals and an increased chance to save money – 55%
- Easier and smoother shop – 28%
- Better selection- 26%
- Faster processes – 25%
- Get better information on the product – 21%
- Routinely shopping on that website already – 21%
Factors driving an in-store purchase and the percentage of people surveyed who agreed:
- Able to see and feel products before buying – 51%
- Easier and smoother shop – 33%
- Returns are more hassle-free – 29%
- Routinely shopping in that’s store already – 28%
- Save money – 22%
The Battle of the Methods!
Type of Payment – Buying online you will most likely need a debit/credit card, PayPal account or some sort of similar payment account. Plus, it goes without saying that you’ll have to wait for your product to be delivered! However, you can relax in the comfort of your own home, while shopping around for the best deal online.
Buying in store if you have all the money ready is super easy. All you need to do is get to the nearest store and the product can be yours in minutes. However, you do need to set time aside to go in the store, which can be difficult if you have a busy schedule.
Product Selection and Availability – Browsing online for a product means you have every make and model of any brand right at your fingertips without even having to move from your sofa! The only setback is the fact you can’t test the TV before buying unless you find the TV at a store near you, trial first then buy online! All reviews and specs are usually available online next to the product as well, with most sites letting you know the availability.
When you opt for buying in store, you are usually limited to only products at a local level, however, you will probably be able to test the TV before buying. Selection can also be limited in store.
Pricing- Online generally features lower prices due to the decreased amount of expenses they have compared to in store, such as unit rentals and customer-facing staff. Many sites also offer money off or some great deals, which could save you even more money. Competing with online, retail stores usually do slash prices, but tend to not go as low as online sellers, and are perhaps more likely to do this as part of seasonal sales rather than throughout the year.
Shipping and Delivery- Both have their pros and cons, however, when buying online you will have your product delivered to your door, usually for a pretty reasonable fee or sometimes for free! When buying in store you either have to find a way to get your appliance home or pay for delivery.
