It’s that time of the month again! We’ve reached the end of May and we have another question to answer for you all. We’re continuing the trend of great questions, and this month we ask: ‘How Has the Television Changed Through the Decades?’
The television has been around for many decades, and its development since the first TV was invented is incredible. From the 3D TVs we have today, you forget that not long-ago, TVs couldn’t display colour. Let’s take a look at the evolution of Televisions.
1930s
The decade arguably the greatest and most influential invention of the 20th century was introduced. In 1939, the first real commercial televisions became widely available. Sets were large pieces of equipment with screens measuring around 12inches. One of the most recognised broadcasted images from this early era includes the 1936 Olympics from Berlin.
1940s
WWII reduced the popularity of the TV in this decade, however, with innovation still persisting in this technology, colour was introduced in the early part of the 40s. This was also when the television commercial was invented. The post-war economy was strong in the late 40s, which saw a boom in television production. Two types of models surfaced; the table top and console.
1950s
Often seen as the hay day and Golden Age of television. In this decade, more people are buying consumer electronics. Programmes such as I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Father Knows Best, and the Lone Ranger are some of the most watched, also, the TV Guide is the number one magazine in the country.
1960s
The decade known to end the era of innocence in the 50s. After the assassination of JFK, families gathered around to watch the news, with Americans beginning to get more news from the television than the newspaper. This is the time televisions became more portable and affordable. The 60s is where an estimated 75 million people watched The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, as well as the time the Vietnam War became the first conflict to be televised.
1970s
1972 saw the first direct broadcast satellite television launched, and the year 1978 was the last year large black and white consoles were manufactured.
1980s
This decade saw a growing number of television accessories like the VCR and home game consoles like Nintendo, with cable also seeing a significant boom. VCR’s were a huge hit, allowing people to watch and record movies in the comfort of their own home.
1990s
The 90s saw big changes in technology altogether, largely due to the internet. Popular television programmes were introduced such as; Friends, Seinfeld, The Simpsons, and Sex and the City. This is also the decade where various TV technologies like Plasma and LCD were in experimental stages. Televisions also now included additional features, like picture in picture, sleep timers, and parental controls.
2000s
The decade where DVD players took over the home and thin televisions were introduced. The advances in LCD and Plasma technology enabled manufacturers to produce a better picture, larger screen sizes and save space, providing bigger and better quality to the consumer.
HD DVD and Blu-ray enter the battle for high definition supremacy. With the introduction of high speed internet, video streaming and digital recording entering the stream. 75 years after the first television was introduced, people are more attached to their televisions than ever as manufacturers are finding new ways to bring big entertainment to the small screen.
