Roll Up, Roll Up! The New Flexible Screen By LG

It’s been one of the main highlights of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and something that everyone in the technology world has been talking about; the flexible screen that can be rolled up like a carpet which has been created by technology giants, LG.

CES 2016 gave consumers and tech junkies alike an incredible introduction to the brand new technology, which is still in the prototype stages. The flexible screen design has been in production for a while now, but this year’s show allowed a unique hands on experience to a lucky few.

So, let’s take a closer look at this remarkable technology!

Full HD With Plans to Reach 4K

The prototype that was revealed at CES 2016 was 18 inches and had a resolution of 1,200 by 810, making it have a full HD picture.

However, LG have announced that they are aiming to make the technology bigger and better, saying that they hope to make screens using this technology that can produce a 4K picture and that reach sizes of 55 inches.

How this technology is possible, LG wouldn’t say. As it is still deep in the prototyping stages, there are sure to be drastic changes to the technology in the coming few years. However, the main influence over this flexible TV design is the leap from LED TVs to OLED TVs.

These OLED TVs are incredibly thin, and at the moment, LG have been the pioneers of the change to OLED technology advancement over the past few years.

Why  Do We Need a Flexible Screen?

We know it’s the question on everyone’s lips, but why does the world need a flexible TV which can be rolled up?

LG have tackled this question, stating that they have created the TV with the home in mind. Not everyone wants to have to dedicate a huge area of their home to a TV set, so they have designed the screen in such a way that it can be rolled up and stored when not in use.

They have also highlighted that these flexible screens would be perfect for a retail environment, making it a perfect candidate for those stores who want to have a visual display, but my not always have the room.

How Effective Are They?

At the moment, the flexible screen still has a few teething issues, and these could be seen during the demonstration at CES 2016.

The screen prototype could only be rolled one way and not the other, and while this isn’t a huge flaw, it is something which we think that they will address before unleashing it onto the market.

However, one huge flaw which many people witnessed was the amount of dead pixels that were visible after the screen had been rolled. Again, the technology is still in the prototype stage and we expect this to be rectified before sale.

It’s also important to note that the screen cannot be folded; only rolled. Any attempt to fold the screen flat will damage the screen itself and damage the circuitry inside.

While there’s a long way to go before the flexible screen hits the shelves- and LG haven’t stated when it will be available for sale, if ever- we are excited to see how this technology advances in the next few years!
