The fiercely competitive fourth quarter of 2013 saw Samsung retain its leading position atop the worldwide market for smart TVs. According to Broadband TV News, Samsung recorded a 26.4% share during this period; a figure which constitutes more than a 10% lead over their nearest competitors. Specifically, these competitors are represented in the main by LG and Sony, who both posted more than 14% of smart TV shipments. The strategies of all three of these leading manufacturers have been very different – Sony has prioritised the addition of Smart TV capabilities onto the wider range of its models for example – yet between them they hold more than 50% of the market shares for smart TVs.
Samsung has been dominant in the international TV market for quite some time, but the battle for future supremacy in this area is still set to continue throughout 2014 and beyond. Curved televisions are one of the most exciting new prospects on the horizon, and Samsung and LG have both entered the fray in this respect with products boasting screens in excess of 100 inches. OLED TVs are also receiving a strong focus, and Samsung has already unveiled both OLED and Ultra HD models at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Not to be outdone, LG has combined both of these technologies into a single commercial TV, although Sony has forgone OLED capability entirely at present; choosing to divert their attention to more immediately relevant LED and 4K TVs.
