“Say Goodbye to My Title Role”: Roles Al Pacino Turned Down

Happy Monday! Yeah, OK, we know… The weekend’s over, but it’s not the end of the world. 5 more days, then 2 more days off! So until then, we figured we’d try cheer you up, or at least make you feel a little bit better about the state of play. Ever made a mistake? And we don’t mean the mistake of missing out on our fantastic bargain-priced cheap TVs, we mean a howler

Star Wars

In a recent interview with The Independent, Al Pacino confessed to having turned down some rather large roles. It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Harrison Ford playing Han Solo in Star Wars, but before he accepted the role as commander of the Millennium Falcon it was actually offered to Pacino. In the interview, Pacino admits to turning down the part because he “didn’t understand the script.” In Al Pacino’s defence (which are three words we don’t get to write often), he was “offered everything” in the height of his fame, so it’s understandable that there would be the odd missed opportunity.

Die Hard

Another iconic role which Pacino turned down was as John McClane in Die Hard. Referring to the decision, Pacino was quoted as saying, “I gave that boy a career.” We certainly aren’t going to argue with Tony Montana…

Pretty Woman

This would have been a movie worth seeing… Imagine Scarface playing the role of smooth talking workaholic Edward Lewis, a role later filled by Richard Gere. Gere was fantastic for the role, with the on screen chemistry between him and Julia Roberts making the film. The movie later went on to be one of the largest earners in 1990.

Taxi Driver

Out of all of the above roles, I think it is safe to say that this is the easiest to see Pacino succeeding in, although who would have the nerve to claim he would out-role Robert De Niro? For his role as former US Marine Travis Bickle, De Niro actually obtained a taxi driving license, driving at weekends to get a feel for the role.

We’re sure Pacino would have nailed all of those roles, although it’s hard to imagine any of those films without their respective protagonists. Still, we hope we’ve made you feel a little bit better about it being the start of the week… (sorry to bring that up again)

Come on, cheer up… we suggest passing the time this evening by watching Al Pacino in some of his most famous films; perhaps a bit of The Godfather or Donnie Brasco.
