Shetland and Orkney Island Freeview users have to retune their equipment today (24th July 2013) so local airwaves can be cleared for the arrival of 4G mobile broadband.
Digital UK has advised that programmes will be disrupted from midnight on the 24th, while the channels and HD services are moved to new frequencies.
The time in which work will be completed varies. While residents at Keelylang Hill will be able to receive transmission from 6am onwards, viewers living at Collafirth Hill, Scalloway and Swinister will be disrupted till midday. Service in Weisdale will not be restored till late afternoon.
Customers needn’t panic: a full retune only takes a few minutes, and can easily be done with your remote control. Although there may be variations between models, the process is extremely similar across the board.
Firstly, check that your Freeview TV or box is on and in digital mode. Press ‘Menu’. Choose the ‘Set Up’ or ‘Installation’ option. If icons appear, select the tool box or spanner. It may ask you for a code; if so, input ‘0000’ or ‘1234’.
Next you should select the ‘Full Retune’ option. This can be referred to by a number of different names, e.g. ‘first time installation’, ‘factory reset’ or ‘default settings’. Don’t select ‘Channel Update’ or ‘Add Channels’. Don’t worry if it asks if it can delete all your channels, this is perfectly normal. Press ‘OK’.
Your channels will then be automatically installed. This may take a few minutes; your equipment is likely to shut down and restart.
