We’ve all been anxious to watch a TV show or a film, wondering about how certain conflicts will be resolved, or simply excited to watch something, when someone lets slip a piece of information about it. Spoilers ‘spoil’ the surprise and the enjoyment of the viewing experience for some viewers.
Second screen technology is becoming increasingly more common, and the potential for spoilers has risen in the past few years. While in the past all you had to do was ask someone to not discuss an episode, nowadays the simple act of looking up information about a character while watching TV might spoil your favourite show.
How Time Zones Can Spoil TV Shows
Back in 2014, AMC’s official Facebook page of the popular TV show The Walking Dead posted a photo with a big spoiler of an episode that had just aired. It was a photo featuring Daryl carrying Beth’s body, with the caption “RIP Beth”. The episode, however, had aired for only some parts of the US.
The West coast and most of the rest of the world hadn’t seen the episode yet, and some fans got very angry. AMC took down the post and released an apology post, but it was too late for many fans who saw the spoiler on social media.
Online Live Discussions
With the rising number of social platforms and its importance for socialisation, staying offline is increasingly more difficult. As you watch an episode, you might get curious about what someone else thought about what you just watched. While it’s fun to know that the majority of people agree with your theories, it can also lead to you finding out plot points you didn’t want to see.
Many people go on Facebook or Twitter to live tweet TV shows, like with Game of Thrones. If you happen to check your feed at the time without having seen the latest episode, you have a very high chance of seeing an important spoiler that will ruin your experience.
Ultimately, it seems that escaping spoilers is down to being clever and avoiding following people who you know will tweet the shows as they air. While dodging spoilers can be tricky, it’s possible to enjoy using a second screen and not have your favourite show spoiled.
