Stranger Than Fiction ( Part 1 )

Great characters are the key to great movies – fact.

The annals of movie history are littered with examples of iconic characters that captivated the popular imagination,  and it’s these individuals that we tend to remember a film for.

But how do film writers craft such captivating characters in the first place?

Many of us can admit to having met our fair share of larger than life characters during our day to day lives and this is true of those in the movie business too. Hence it’s rather unsurprising that many pop culture characters are actually based on real life characters!

Intrigued? Then you’re in luck as here we thought we’d take a look at some of the most famous film characters, who were actually based on real life people – enjoy!

The Joker

The Joker is the ultimate Batman villain, and one of the most iconic comic book characters of all time!

But did you know that from his twisted smile to his white stage make-up, the joker actually borrowed his entire look from silent film star Conrad Veidt.

That’s right, the Joker’s creators drew their inspiration for Batman’s nemesis from Veidt’s portrayal of the character Gwynplaine in the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs. And it’s fair to say that Batman fans the world over are forever thankful that they did.

You can see a clip of Veidt in action in the video below:

Jabba The Hut

It’s hard to see how this slimy, slug-like character could be based on anyone. But believe us, he was!

Ever heard of Sydney Greenstreet? This on screen legend was one of the most renowned film noir actors of his generation and secured iconic roles in the likes of Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon, to name but a few. But that said, he was also the definition of a type cast actor.

During his career he became known for playing a string of greedy gangster types – who to put it politely, were a little on the larger side.

As such it’s perhaps not that surprising that he provided the inspiration for George Lucas’ conniving crime boss Jabba the Hut.

The story goes that, not a person to mince his words, Lucas’ exact instructions to his costume department were to make the character look ”alien and grotesque… just like Sydney Greenstreet” – charming!
