While female characters have always been present in comics and films, this year sees Super Girl Power taking on more leading roles than ever before. For those who have been eager to see lead female roles on the typically male-dominated screen, the future looks very promising.
Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman’s first appearance can be traced back to 1941’s All Star Comics #8. Known as Diana Prince outside of her homeland and as Princess Diana of Themyscira when at home, Wonder Woman is a warrior princess of the Amazons, a demigoddess, and one of the founders of the Justice League. Her signature outfit includes her indestructible bracelets, sword and shield, and the Lasso of Truth.
Wonder Woman’s solo film premieres June 2nd 2017 in the UK and on November 17th you can see her in Justice League alongside Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, and Superman.
Wasp in Ant-Man
Janet van Dyne’s first appearance in the Marvel Comics was in 1963 in Tales of Astonish #44. One of the founding members of the Avengers and the one to name them, Wasp has been overlooked in the Marvel cinematic universe until her recent appearance in Ant-Man. The success of the film has brought about a sequel called Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad
Harley Quinn, or Harleen Frances Quinzel, M.D., was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum. Her first appearance was back in 1992 in Batman: The Animated Series, in the episode “Joker’s Favor”. While working at Arkham, she became fascinated with the Joker and eventually helps him escape the asylum. Although Suicide Squad isn’t out in the theatres yet, Harley Quinn is already set to have her own spin-off film.
Captain Marvel
Although there have been many versions of Captain Marvel, the one featuring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson. Her first appearance was in March of 1968 in Marvel Superheroes #13. Her initial powers are endurance, superhuman strength, flight, stamina, physical durability, a restricted precognitive “sixth sense” power, and a perfectly combined human/Kree physiology that allows her to be immune to most toxins.
Jessica Jones
Possessing superhuman strength and limited flight, private investigator Jessica Jones suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after her encounter with the villainous Kilgrave. This eponymous Netflix TV show alters her origin story from the comics, providing audiences with a psychological thriller and neo-noir series that has been highly acclaimed.
