There are some movies that you finish watching and immediately cross your fingers for a sequel. Then the sequel never happens. Then there are those films that definitely didn’t need a sequel but got one anyway.
Did we really need that 4th Home Alone film sans Macaulay Culkin?
Some amazing movies have gone on to have sequels that have been really bad. Not just “not worth the cinema money” bad, but just a truly terrible film altogether. It definitely makes you wonder why the movie gods don’t just leave great films alone. Is there anything wrong with a film just remaining as an awesome one off?
Bring It On 2 (and 3 and 4 and 5…)
For some reason that we can’t work out, the Bring It On film went on to have not one but 4 sequels. The original film was released back in 2000 to a pretty good reception. Despite the fluffy plot of the film, it was actually very well received. It was praised for its depiction of several social issues, such as race and homophobia.
This was probably why the people behind the film thought it was a good idea to release a sequel three years later. Despite the movie going “straight to video” and receiving nothing but criticism, they still went on to release 3 more. None of them came close to the success of the first film.
Taken 2 & 3
We’ve never met anyone who hasn’t seen the original Taken movie. In fact, we’ve never met anyone who has watched the first film and hated it. The 2009 action thriller film with Liam Neeson is about a former CIA agent who vows to track down his kidnapped daughter in France. But you probably already know this!
It wasn’t too much of a surprise then that people were really excited when news of a sequel was released. This excitment lasted until the first half hour of the film, in which everyone realised that it was basically the same plot as the first. How much bad luck can this guy have? First his daughter is kidnapped and then his ex wife. You don’t even want to know about the third film. Stick to the first!
The Hangover II and III
The first Hangover film was very, very good. If you haven’t seen it already, we definitely recommend that you do. In a nutshell, it’s about a group of men that visit Las Vegas for a bachelor party. They have a really wild night and end up losing the groom. It received positive reviews from the critics, who praised it for being an extremely well written and funny script.
The powers that be obviously thought that they could cash in on the success of the first movie and release a second one. Whilst the film did well at the box office (people were obviously riding the high of the first one), it got some very bad reviews. Critics slammed it for not being able to recapture what made the first one so great in the first place. Obviously, they thought it was still worth releasing a third one. It really wasn’t.
Mean Girls 2
It’s very rare to find someone who hasn’t watched the original Mean Girls film which was released back in 2004. The teen comedy, staring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams, was described by critics as being “funnier” and more “smartly written” than other teen comedies that were around at the same time.
7 years later and someone suddenly decided that the film needed a sequel. Mean Girls 2 was a straight to TV film that aired on ABC Family in 2011. It only included one of the original cast (the principal). The film was slammed by almost everyone for being terrible. And it really was!
