They say in the movie business that you should never work with children or animals, but sometimes, a young actor comes along who completely blows that statement out of the water. In this post, we’ll take a look at some of the most impressive child stars who managed to completely outshine their adult colleagues.
Leonardo DiCaprio – What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?
So, Leo may not have exactly been a child when he starred in this film (he was 19 by the time the film was released) but his outstanding performance deserves a mention. This was one of Leo’s first major roles as he took on the character of Arnie Grape, a 17 year old boy with autism. His performance is so real and convincing; it’s ridiculous to think that he still hasn’t won an Oscar!
Henry Thomas – E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
This child star was a mere 12 years old when E.T. was released, and we challenge anyone to find fault with his incredible performance. But what’s even more impressive is his audition tape for the movie. Seriously, this kid puts Brad Pitt to shame!
Abigail Breslin – Little Miss Sunshine
Abigail Breslin stars as the determined young Olive Hoover in this offbeat comedy that tells the story of the Hoover family and their individual struggles. The young star manages to convey just about every emotion under the sun as she brilliantly outshines her famous co-stars.
Haley Joel Osment – The Sixth Sense
This 11 year old boy’s ability to freak every viewer out is quite literally scary. He may look cute in the film, but boy, does he manage to get us hiding behind cushions and throwing random objects at the TV. Despite scaring us out of our skin, we still appreciate his brilliant acting ability at such a young age – nice one Haley!
