Love it or hate it, reality TV takes up an awful lot of screen time. There’s something about watching normal folk and celebs making idiots of themselves that people just can’t get enough of. Since the dawn of Big Brother in 2000, reality television has spiralled from social experiments to being downright offensive. Today, we’ll take an uncomfortable look at some of the worst that reality TV has to offer.
Splash!
We all love a reality show that involves Z-list celebrities looking completely moronic, so Splash is grimly perfect. The beacon of British Olympic hopes, Tom Daley, put the rag-tag group of celebs through their paces as they learnt how to jump off diving boards with very little grace and even less talent.
Ex on the Beach
To be perfectly honest, dating shows are always going to be pretty terrible, but add a crazy twist and you’ve got a recipe for the most tasteless TV to date! The basic premise is that you take a group of 20-somethings, stick them on an island, encourage ‘romances’ then throw their exes into the mix. Sounds great, right?
Celebrity Big Brother
It was never great, but CBB has somehow managed to get progressively more hair-wrenchingly awful every year. With ‘stars’ ranging from Gary Busey to George Galloway, the Celebrity Big Brother house has definitely seen some of the lowest lowlights of human history.
Geordie Shore
Inspired by the equally horrible Jersey Shore, the Newcastle spin on things does nothing for the British image. Expect to see the worst side of the younger generation, as a group of Geordies embrace a life of leisure in the most irresponsible and degrading way they possibly can.
The Undateables
Well the title says it all. Channel 4 were really scraping the barrel when they came up with this one. The idea is that you take a group of people who the Channel 4 execs have deemed to be ‘undateable’, whether that is due to a physical or mental issue, and televise them as they search for love. Offensive? Yes.
