The Advantages of LCD TV

When it comes to buying a new TV then you may have difficulty in choosing the right set for you if you’re properly informed about your options. Not everybody will be ware of the difference between plasma, LCD and LED TVs and the pros and cons of each of these technologies.

Although the differences between the different types of TVs currently on the market have been discussed in this blog in the past we have decided that a more in depth overview would help those who are unsure to gain a better understanding of the advantages of each different technology.

In this blog we’ll discuss LCD TVs, the most popular TVs currently on the market. The vast majority of TVs being sold by major electronics retailers are LCD and there are various reasons why many consumers favour them over the alternatives.

Firstly, it helps to understand how LCD TVs work. These TVs are made from liquid crystals that are held between clear glass electrodes. The amount of light that can pass through the crystals is controlled by the level of current that flows through them. Each pixel is divided up into three smaller ‘sub pixels’, red green and blue the colours being displayed are dependent on how the sub pixels are illuminated. The liquid crystals therefore change their colour depending on the voltage that is applied to them. The screen is illuminated by a backlight allowing viewers to see the images caused from the changing colours of the liquid crystals.

So, what are the advantages of LCD TV? Well, for one they have a very slim profile and are very lightweight compared to other TVs, so they can easily be placed anywhere and moved around without difficulty.

LCD TVs also have a very long life span, around 60,000 viewing hours. It is estimated that if you watched TV for 8 hours every day without fail then an LCD should last for twenty years.

One of the major advantages that LCD screens have over other technologies, notably plasma, is that the screens can be produced in a range of sizes starting from around 5” to 65”. Plasma screens are rarely smaller than 37”, so they can be quite inconvenient if you require a smaller TV.

The backlighting systems that are necessary for LCD TVs to function give them another edge over alternatives. It allows them to produce very deep blacks, which increase picture quality. The way in which LCD TVs function also make them much more energy efficient than plasma screens. Some manufactures have sought to further increase the energy efficiency of their TVs and there are Philips and Samsung LCD TVs that are very energy efficient.

Finally, and for many people this is the determining factor that causes them to opt for an LCD TV, the price of LCD TVs often tends to be lower. These TVs have lower production cost and as a result manufacturers are able to offer a range of cheap LCD TVs to consumers.
