The Best Box Sets for Binge Watching

The August Bank Holiday is rapidly approaching, and whilst many people will be making plans to frolic in the sunshine that may or may not ever come to be, sensible people will be making plans to enjoy some quality ‘me time’. Of course, by ‘me time’ we mean wrapping yourself in a duvet, sitting in front of the television and not moving for three days. It’s been a long year so far, you’ve worked hard and you deserve a little alone time with some quality television.

If you have big ambitions of a long weekend in front of the TV, then here are our recommendations for the best box sets you can really sink your teeth into. Let the binge watching begin!

Curb Your Enthusiasm

If you’ve not seen Curb Your Enthusiasm before then you’re really missing out. If you have seen it, then why not revisit; this is a program that stands up to repeated viewings!

The ultimate in cringe worthy comedy, the series follows the exploits of Larry David, the real life creator of Seinfeld, playing a grossly exaggerated version of himself as he goes through life failing to pick up on social cues and putting his foot in his mouth. It’s utterly compelling viewing, although you might find yourself wanting the sofa to swallow you as Larry and his hapless manager Jeff, excruciatingly bludgeon their way through the most rudimentary of social interactions.

With eight series, each one following its own specific story arc with reoccurring characters, there is plenty of Larry to fuel a serious binge watch session.

However, if you just want to dip your toes in, we’d recommend ‘The Doll’, episode 7 of series 2, featuring a spectacularly foul-mouthed rant from the venomous Suzie Green, Jeff’s wife and Larry’s arch enemy.

Game of Thrones

If you’ve not seen Game of Throne then maybe it’s because you’re put off by the high-fantasy, swords and sorcery concept. If that’s the case, then reassess your priorities, because there’s an awful lot more than goblin-slaying going on in this epic saga-in-progress. Currently there are four series, with more on the way. The source material, a series of novels by George R.R. Martin, hasn’t even been finished!

If back-stabbing, treachery, subterfuge, political intrigue, pitched battles, incestuous relationships and dragons peak your interest, then look no further as Game of Thrones has all of this and more. Just don’t let yourself get too attached to a favourite character, as the chances are they’ll be brutally slaughtered within the next few episodes.

Cliff hangers galore, this will keep you on the edge of your seat. Just beware of spoilers; there’s a risk that anyone who’s up to date with the series or who has read the books will blab, revealing some integral plot point to you!

Breaking Bad

Released to relatively little fanfare in 2009, Breaking Bad rapidly garnered a cult following and had legions of viewers hooked on Walter White, the cancer-stricken chemistry teacher turned crystal-meth-dealing gangster. The show has run its course now, and there are five series to get through.

Excellently written, the character development across the course of the show is superb as Walt plus his former pupil and now partner in crime delve deeper into a very dangerous world.

With a stellar selection of supporting characters viewers will be instantly enraptured with Walt, watching how his mysterious double life affects his family and relationships. We don’t want to reveal too much, so if you’ve not already seen this revolutionary show then we strongly advise you to log on to Netflix right away and start from the beginning!

There’s more than enough television listed above to keep you occupied for months, let alone a bank holiday weekend. All the programs we’ve listed are available to purchase as DVD or Blu-Ray boxsets, plus they can all be streamed from official sources in high-definition.
