Here at Electronic World, we want to step away from our 4K TV deals for a little while, in order to pay respects to someone who has entertained us for many years.
Just like us, a lot of people woke up to the sad news yesterday that TV and radio presenter and entertainer Sir Terry Wogan had passed away. At just 77, it’s reported that he died after a short but brave battle with cancer, something that only his close family knew he was battling.
Loved for his wit, warmth and hilarious commentary, Wogan’s career was one that spanned over 5 decades.
To celebrate the life of someone who brought a lot of laughter into our front rooms over the years, we’ve put together a guide to some of his very best moments.
The Floral Dance
Although he spent quite a lot of his time introducing music as a radio presenter, Wogan decided to take a stab at singing himself back in 1978. He decided to record a version of the English Folk song ‘The Floral Dance’ – albeit a very tongue in cheek cover. It reached #21 in the charts but the highlight of the whole thing, was when he appeared on TOTP singing the song. He could barely control his laughter as he threw flowers at a baffled and amused crowd.
The Eurovision Song Contest Commentary
The Eurovision is probably one of the main things that a lot of people will remember Wogan for. He presented the show for around 20 years until he stepped down in 2008 for Graham Norton to take over. People always looked forward to his cynical comments, mocking off presenters and contestants and his blatant dislike for the way countries voted in groups.
Presenting Gone Wrong
We can’t forget the time he announced the wrong winner on the show ‘Making Your Mind Up.’ The show was the one in which we had to vote for the act who was to represent the UK at the Eurovision. The final two were Scooch and Cyndi. Although Scooch were the winners, he announced Cyndi as winning instead and had to be corrected. Awkward.
Gangnam Style
During the 2012 Children in Need, which Wogan presented alongside Tess Daley, he was challenged by Tess to do the ‘Gangnam Style’ dance. Replying that he was “born to dance” he tries to recreate the popular dance moves. Very very funny!
There are many more TV and radio moments that we could have chosen to highlight the amazing career that Sir Terry Wogan has had over the years. He will be deeply missed by everyone.
