When it comes to Hollywood, if you want the part – you’ve got to be the part, and yes – that sometimes does (if you’re an actor) mean changing your appearance to fit every tiny detail of the character you’re trying to bag.
We’ve all heard of some of the crazy things today’s A-listers do to prepare for an upcoming role – from packing the pounds to shedding a dangerous amount of weight and undergoing body modifications – many of today’s most recognised celebs have undergone crazy transformations whilst getting into character.
And while we don’t recommend the likes of Jared Leto or Christian Bale’s diet tactics at home, as many of these shape-shifting diets are borderline unhealthy and dangerous – here are some of the most dramatic and shocking on-the-job transformations from the stars of the big screen!
Robert De Niro – Raging Bull
Talk about dedication. In order to play the iconic boxer, Jake LaMotta, Robert De Niro built muscle and trained with the legend himself to achieve the look of the boxer during his heyday. De Niro also fought in three real boxing matches in order to master the art.
Portraying LaMotta’s later years, De Niro then had to pack on almost 60 pounds in weight, putting his body under immense strain and change. De Niro picked up both a Golden Glove and Academy Award for his role.
Rooney Mara – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
As a way of making a first leading-role impression, Rooney Mara ditched her feminine appearance, and opted to become goth-hacker Lisbeth Salander.
This transformation required Mara to not only pierce her eyebrow, nose, lip and ears – but dye her hair black, chop her bangs and shave the majority of her head! As a result, the 26-year old received a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars.
Christian Bale – American Hustle
From Batman to con-man, Christian Bale’s iconic portrayal as Irving Rosenfield, an overweight, balding con artist in American Hustle was a shock-transformation in comparison to his other leading roles.
Bale told People Magazine that he gained over 43 pounds for the role by adapting a strict diet of cheeseburgers, donuts and anything else that was high in everything-bad-for-you. He estimated going from around 185 to 228 pounds, as well as shaving his head and learning to adopt a slouched position, which resulted in the actor accidentally slipping a disc in his back! Not cool, Bale.
