The return of one of TV’s most anticipated TV shows – Game of Thrones – is coming to our screens in just three days and we cannot wait! It’s absolute torture (no pun intended) to leave fans waiting for so long to see what happens to some of our most beloved characters, but the wait is nearly over!
This show, based on the books by George R.R Martin, have been hugely successful since it came to our screens in 2011. Some of you were hooked from the very beginning and, for others, it may have taken a little longer to get fully enthralled by the series. But we can all agree that, when it comes back, it takes over our lives!
The show has brought us some of the most creative and terrifying characters, from Joffrey Baratheon (who still has to be the most hated TV character in history), Daenerys Targaryen and the beloved Ned Stark. This show has been a rollercoaster of emotions for us all, and we here at Electronic World thought we would bring you some facts and statistics on the Game of Thrones series to get us all ready for the coming seventh season.
TV Show Deaths vs The Books
HBO, naturally, has to make some changes from the books when adapting them to a television show, and it’s no surprise that characters that are still alive in the books have been killed in the show, keeping all of us on our toes when it comes to who will be killed off next!
There are extremely enthusiastic fans out there who have taken their time to work out the death toll for us, compiled from six seasons and before the seventh premieres. Can you try and guess the death count? There have been a staggering 1,243 deaths since it first premiered 6 years ago!
Season 1 – 59 deaths occurred in the season that started it all. When Ned Stark, the main hero and character and, supposedly, the least one at risk, was beheaded, viewers realised no one was safe.
Season 2 – 130 deaths occurred in the second season, and although it featured the least major character deaths, it gave viewers the first big battle scene: The Battle of the Blackwater.
Season 3 – 87 deaths occurred in the third season which featured the infamous Red Wedding, claiming the lives of four major characters.
Season 4 – 182 deaths occurred in the fourth season, with Game of Thrones proving it could still shock viewers with the poisoning of King Joffrey or Tywin’s unglamorous death. The Battle of Castle Black was responsible for 86 of these deaths!
Season 5 – 246 deaths occurred in the fifth season, with the Massacre at Hardhome responsible for 98 of these.
Season 6 – 540 deaths occurred in the sixth season, with this massive body count coming as no surprise due to the deadly Battle of the Bastards. Three major Houses also got wiped out almost completely: Houses Baratheon, Bolton and Tyrell no longer have any heirs.
This graph shows the number of deaths from season 1-5. As the show has a running theme of killing off who they wish, the death toll in the books is considerably lower. Here are 25 characters still alive in the books that were killed in the show.
Questions to Answer from The Coming Season
Game of Thrones has the habit of leaving many questions unanswered and open to interpretation, with many fan theories trying to distinguish what will happen in the coming season, and season seven is no different. Here are some important questions we just need answering:
How big of a role will Grey Worm have? – This character has become a fan favourite on the show, but how large of a role will he play? With Dany moving on Westeros, will he survive or will he become an early victim of this season?
Will Littlefinger finally corrupt Sansa? – Littlefinger’s obsession with Caitlyn Stark was no secret, and he’s zeroed in on Sansa because of it. Will he use her for his own survival? We all know how he manages to weave his way out of trouble and how deceitful he can be.
What does Sansa want? – Sansa saved Winterfell but handed over control to Jon, and got revenge and closure by seeing Ramsey fed to his own dogs. She also rejected Littlefinger’s offer of marriage. What is in store for her character this season?
Who will Arya kill next? – Arya has not forgotten her kill list, and she now has the ability to change faces. Here’s who is still alive on her list:
- Ilyn Payne – beheaded her father
- Cersei Lannister – responsible for the murder of her father, mother, and brother
- The Hound – killed the butcher’s boy, Mycah
- The Mountain – tortured and killed people at Harrenhal
- Melisandre – took away Gendry
- Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr – sold Gendry to Melisandre
Who Do We Want to Be the Ruler of The Kingdoms?
Season six was as much of a guess to anyone as it was the first without the guidance of the books, and season seven will be the same. Following the dramatic ending, it begs the question; who will be the one to sit on the Iron Throne?
From last season, there seems to be three characters who stand out further than the rest to become the highest bidders; the newly crowned Queen Cersei, the Mother of Dragons Daenerys, and the newly declared King in the North Jon Snow. Who do you want it to be? And will it be this obvious or will someone else sit on the throne instead?
Taking the high death count of this show into consideration, maybe there will be no one else left to rule the Seven Kingdoms at the end of it!
There are so many answers and emotions this season will bring and we simply cannot wait.
