The Rise of the Female Detective

Throughout TV history men have dominated the crime drama genre, with a long slew of male detectives from Poirot to Morse having become firm favourites. However back in 1991, the groundbreaking ITV series Prime Suspect, starring Helen Mirren, in many respects changed the face of television crime dramas, paving the way for a change of the guard, and the rise of the female detective.

Recent years have seen a growing number of crime series casting female leads as detective on the case, and in many respects female detective series have almost become a genre in their own right. Here’s our guide to some of the best detective series with female leads to have graced our screens of late, who have helped break the mould, and redefine the image of the investigator in popular culture.

The Killing

The hugely popular and addictive Danish detective series The Killing was one of the first of the new female-led detective series to have emerged in recent years. At the heart of this gripping and gritty series was the character of Sarah Lund, unapologetically flawed, yet a truly unstoppable force to be reckoned with. The success of the show spawned an equally popular American remake that retains much of what was great about the original series.

The Bridge

Another Danish detective series, The Bridge was in many respects genre-defining in its own right, providing a refreshing change from the numerous formulaic crime dramas assaulting our screens of late, through its exploration of a number of harsh truths about society. The key to the series success undoubtedly lies in its characters, and Sofia Helin’s turn as the brilliant but rather blunt Saga Noren is truly unforgettable.

The Fall

Another thrilling BBC drama screened last year was The Fall, a dark and violent crime series starring acclaimed actress Gillian Anderson showing off her best British accent, as she hunts down the elusive killer at the centre of the story, with icy effectiveness. At times the series makes for unsettling viewing, however it’s hard not to get sucked into the plot of this enthralling series.

These shows are a must-watch for fans of the crime genre and the good news is that both The Bridge and The Fall are set to return for a new series.
