The Ultimate TV Jargon Buster – Part Two

Sometimes it can be really confusing when searching for a new TV. You know you want something better than your current one, you know that you want it to be HD or 3D, and you know that you want a smart TV that includes Netflix – but where do you even start looking?  For those who are not very TV savvy, all the different names and numbers can probably seem bewildering.

As a company who specialises in TVs, providing customers with all the latest TV and smart TV deals –it’s safe to say that we consider ourselves TV experts. However, we are aware that a lot of people don’t know their 720p from 1080p.

We recently started to put together a guide on some of the confusing jargon that you may come across when shopping for a new TV – to help you make sense of it all. We have written another one for all you TV newbies out there – give it a read!

Native Resolution

A native resolution is referring to the number of pixels that are displayed on a screen. The highest screen resolution that is available right now is 1920 x 1080 – which is what you are looking for when searching for a good HD TV. However, it doesn’t always mean that the picture will be perfect for standard TV or when watching a DVD.

OLED TV

The abbreviation OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode, and is one of the newest types of technology on the market. An OLED TV doesn’t require a backlight, meaning that it generally can display deeper black levels than any other TV. It offers customers a bright and perfect picture, as well as a smooth motion and vibrant colours. It has an extremely thin screen, and an outstanding viewing angle that makes it easy to watch from anywhere in a room. Unfortunately, with the technology still being brand new – it’s fairly expensive!

Optical Digital Output

For those wanting to use surround sound with their TV – there are two types of digital audio connection. These are coaxial and optic – both have the ability to carry stereo signals but it’s imperative that you hook up the correct inputs on both your TV and surround sound system.

Plasma TV

A plasma TV is when each pixel on the screen is illuminated by a tiny shard of plasma. The plasma has been placed between two thin and delicate pieces of glass, making it display ultraviolet light that shows up on the screen.

Smart TV

A Smart TV is connected to your internet through the use of an ethernet cable, through WIFI, or another external source. This is how you are given access to a selection of extra features on your TV.

This allows people to use Netflix, stream programmes from BBC and ITV iPlayer, play and download games, and access the internet including Facebook and Twitter.

Surround Sound

This is the arrangement of speakers in a way that creates a more realistic sound effect for viewers when watching TV or listening to music through the TV. It’s especially popular for people who are looking to create their own home theatre set up.

We hope that these jargon buster posts will help finding a new TV a little easier for you, but if you still want a little more help, we can help!
