At Electronic World, we aren’t just about saving you money with our excellent Smart TV deals or keeping you in the loop with all the new technological advances and releases, we like to help you get the best out of your device. With DVD players going the way of the VHS player, streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video are taking over.
Netflix, in particular, offers a wide range of titles for its subscribers. With hundreds of television shows, films, documentaries and stand-ups to choose from, it would cost well in the thousands of pounds to own a copy of everything on offer. With the option of dipping your toe in the e-water of a series or film without the committal of going to a shop, streaming services seem the way forward for the increasingly selective consumer.
Netflix anticipates having over 61 million users by the end of the current quarter, but how many of those people are getting the most from their Netflix service?
Rate! Rate! Rate!
This may seem somewhat of an obvious thing to explain to an avid Netflix user, but is all too easy to watch a show and forget to rate it. But if that show was great, why not tell Netflix? Conversely, tell them what you hate! They can recommend shows to you that you may otherwise overlook. We’ve all done the ‘book by its cover’ scan that takes you aaages to select something to watch, so why not let Netflix make the choice for you? Also, to tailor your account even more, you can go to the Taste Profile tab at the head of the screen and rate genres, tones and storylines specific to your taste preference.
Get Trailers and Extra Ratings
You needn’t settle for the mere star rating system that comes as standard with Netflix; you can download a free Google Chrome extension, called Netflix Enhancer, which adds Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb Ratings. As a result you can make a more educated decision on what you are about to spend the next couple of hours of your life watching. Separate the sweet from the naff!
HD Everything
Want to see the wrinkles on your favourite star’s face? Well… If you are paying for Netflix’s High-Def Plan (which, incidentally, costs the same as the Standard Def plan), you can! Simply go to your Account page, select Playback Settings, then under Data Usage select High and save the changes… Done! As you would expect, high definition requires extra data, so make sure you are hooked up to Wi-Fi before starting a binge.
Keystroke Shortcuts
What’s more first-world-problemly-annoying than having to select from the massive database of shows? “Using a mouse of course,” I hear you say! So to eliminate the use of these pesky bedfellows, why not learn a few of these simple shortcuts:
Spacebar or Enter Pause / Play
Pg Down Pause
Pg Up Play
F Fullscreen
Esc Exit fullscreen
Shift + Left Rewind
Shift + Right Fast-forward
Up or Down Volume control
M Mute
Improve Subtitle Visibility
The default yellow writing with black background isn’t always suitable, or even that legible, for the show you are watching. A little known tip that can improve your viewing experience no end is in Your Account. If you have a gander in Your Profile and select Subtitle Appearance, you can alter colour and font and make them specific to the show you are watching.
Netflix is a fantastic medium for maximising your TV bingeing time, and with the above tips we hope we’ve made your streaming experience that bit more convenient and a little more fluid. At Electronic World we strive to make your viewing experience as enjoyable as possible and get the best performance from your device. If you would like assistance with your TV or would like information on the products and services we have on offer, please contact us on 0121 327 3273 and one of our friendly staff will be more than happy to help.
Happy viewing!
