Top Alternative Christmas Films

OK, OK… we know we’re starting early; but with that bloke knocking about on the moon and that cat making an appearance on the box, we figured we would give our two cents at this time of year. While we may be the go to guys when it comes to cheap TV deals, our whole team is passionate about all things TV and film, so we thought we’d provide you with a different take on Christmas and provide you with some of our favourite alternative Christmas films.

Die Hard (1988)

Not very far out of the box thinking with this one… Die Hard is an absolute classic and boasts Bruce at his best. Getting between ol’ Willis and his family on Christmas is never the best of ideas, particularly if you’re a ne’er-do-well. What seems like an act of terrorism at first turns out to have a further agenda, and of course our Bruce is on the scene to save the day.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

A little known film, Rare Exports follows the tale of a family affected by a group of Santa-hunters who believe they’ve found the real deal. The only thing is, the real Santa doesn’t have much time for children and neither do his helpers. This quirky black comedy offers an alternative to the usual fluffy and warm Christmas flick, with its sinister overtones and eerie setting.

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

A Coen Brothers classic, The Hudsucker Proxy sees a money hungry corporate tycoon, Paul Newman, put innocently bumbling Norville in charge of the company in an attempt to lower the share price to make for an easy buyout. Unfortunately, Norville, played by Tim Robbins, stumbles across a toy that turns out to be a runaway success! If you’re a fan of the Coen Brothers, you’ll love The Hudsucker Proxy; it’s their tip of the hat to screwball comedies, and in true Coen-style, they create a comedy classic.

With Christmas just around the corner… What? It is! It pays to grab yourself a copy of all of the above for when you get sick of all the smushy-loveliness that can rear its head around this time of year. Failing that, no one ever tires of The Muppets Christmas Carol, so there’s always that of course! Either way, to view any of the above you’re going to need to grab yourself an awesome TV set to give these films the viewing platform they deserve, so get in touch!
