‘The Great Escape’, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ and countless others have become integral to the Christmas tradition, some for more obvious reasons than others. It’s difficult to say what it is about a film like ‘The Great Escape’ that makes it such a staple of Christmas day. It is, undoubtedly an excellent film and a true classic, but equally, so is ‘Citizen Kane’, but that hasn’t become an annual family tradition. There are many distinctions that suit each film to its purpose and something about the nature of the film makes ‘The Great Escape’ so accessible to people of all ages – and that’s the relevant defining factor.
Christmas is a time of togetherness and inclusion for everybody, and that’s what ‘The Great Escape’ offers. Clearly defined ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’ present no difficulty when it comes to choosing sides, and the simple plot (literally outlined very succinctly in the title) make it easy to follow even if it’s just making up part of the background in the Christmas scene. With a little bit of everything for everyone; action, drama, tension, history and a motorbike chase, the film has something that can appeal to everyone.
And that mass appeal is true of the more recent addition to the festive tradition – the Doctor Who Christmas special. Children, teenagers, parents and the whole family can get together and enjoy some entertainment each year thanks to these traditions.
