My Cart - Hot on the heels of LG’s curved screen TV press release, Sony have announced that they have two models of ultra high definition TVs available to pre-order from their website. The models have a 55 inch or a 65 inch screen size that sports a 4K, ultra high definition resolution.
The current Full HD TVs available in the UK have a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. You can easily identify TVs with this resolution; they will have the words ‘1080p’ or ‘Full HD’ in their description. Ultra HD 4K TVs have a resolution which is 4 times that of current Full HD.

Will My Existing HD TV Be Obsolete?
The short answer is no.
Despite the release of TVs that are capable of displaying 4K resolutions there are no current UK broadcasters transmitting 4K pictures. The techradar website reports that Sony have entered a partnership with Wimbledon and the BBC to film this year’s event in 4K, but as yet it is unclear if it will be broadcast in this quality. The most likely outcome will be that Sony will provide displays at the event that will demonstrate 4K pictures.
Until the TVs become widely available, it is unlikely that any broadcasters will start transmitting in that quality. Sony is the first to start selling the TVs which will hit the high street stores in June. The current price tag is £3800 for the 55 inch model and £5900 for the 65 inch model. This is clearly going to limit uptake to the niche of only the wealthiest people.
Even the official name of this new technology has not been settled upon yet. Many people in the industry are calling it Ultra HD, meanwhile Sony are opting for 4K. If any proof is needed of how immature the technology is, not having a standard name would be it.
