As providers of cheap TV deals, we do a lot of thinking about the things we watch. We have our favourite shows, our favourite films, our favourite channels and, our favourite characters. We realised though, that when it comes to famous film and TV characters, it can be hard to remember that there’s an actor somewhere in there- someone who’s playing the role so brilliantly, you’re forgetting that they’re just doing a job.
It can also be the case that some characters have been made so iconic by the actors that play them; you can’t imagine the role going to anyone else. Well, as the TV and movie industry is vast, with a large amount of talent available, it should come as no surprise when we say that many of the iconic roles you love- roles that have won critical acclaim, nearly went to someone else.
Yes it’s true and you’ll be surprised by some of the ‘nearlys’ as we’ll call them. Some of them are just plain odd. So, in the spirit of fun, we thought we’d list a few of them off here to share the wackiness.
John Travolta- Forest Gump (Forest Gump)
Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. Well, in this case we got Tom Hanks as the loveable Forest Gump rather than Travolta. Travolta would later go on to state that he regretted turning down the role, but all was not lost for him that year, as he went on to star in Pulp Fiction, and actually went head to head against Hanks for the Best actor Oscar. Hanks however, did end up taking home the gold. Much deserved we think.
Jack Nicolson- Michael Corleone (The Godfather)
This one is incredibly hard to imagine, as it’s not only the character that’s iconic, but the entire film, so there isn’t much room for what ifs. But yes, originally Jack Nicolson was offered the role of the war hero turned mob boss, but turned it down as he felt he wasn’t right for the part. Jack Nicolson has never stated any regret about turning the role down; in fact he said that “There were a lot of actors who could have played Michael, myself included, but Al Pacino was Michael Corleone.”
Al Pacino- Han Solo (Star Wars)
Yes you read that correctly. While his portrayal of Michael Corleone was nothing less than iconic, Al Pacino might have also been remembered for playing the cocky, space smuggler Han Solo. Pacino was reportedly the first to be offered the role, but turned it down as he thought it was “too out-there”. While we know and love this space hero to have the face of Harrison Ford, Jack Nicolson, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray were also offered the role.
Weird, right? It’s hard to imagine these roles in the hands of other people, and know that you know the alternatives, it’s even weirder! Well it gets better, so be sure to check back for part 2!
