At Electronic World we pride ourselves of being able to pass savings onto our valued customers, such as with our superb 4K TV deals or our 3D TV offers. When it comes to keeping you guys entertained we like to think that there’s no one better, be that through providing you with the ultimate platform to binge on your favourite show or through offering you news laden or amusing blogs.
In keeping with the latter, we want to resurrect an old series from many-a-moon ago as we take a look at some of the weirdest TV shows ever made. Last time we highlighted the obscene world of Man vs Beast and Bridalpasty, among others, however this time around we’ve managed to excel ourselves.
Takeshi’s Castle
Let’s kick off with a classic. Takeshi’s Castle is one of Britain’s favourite imports after pizza and Heineken. Made in Japan, Takeshi’s Castle sees hundreds of contestants go head to head in the most amazingly comical and over the top feats of athleticism ever to grace the planet. From riding down a hill in a bowl without falling out to sprinting across a river trying to avoid the fake stepping stones, the show often has no winner. There are a few who’ve claimed to have seen one of these elusive winners but they’re out looking for Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster so are absent for questioning.
Ghostwatch
Ghostwatch was a one-off TV show that actually has somewhat of a weird cult following. The show was presented by the likes of Michael Parkinson and Craig Charles and involved an interactive trip around a ‘haunted house’ in London. The show was pre-recorded but was made to appear like it was live, with live phone-in interviews and scenes where they apparently witnessed ghostly activity. In one particular scene the camera pans across to see a ghostly figure but when they ‘rewatch it’ it is nowhere to be seen. The days before being able to pause and rewind live TV, ey!
Naked Jungle
Naked Jungle was aired on channel 5 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of British naturism. The format was that of a children’s game show, where by the contestants were to compete in a variety of obstacle courses. The catch? They were all naked… including the presenter, which was none other than Keith Chegwin. Reflecting on his part in the show – pun intended – Cheggers was quoted as saying, “It’s the worst career move I made in my entire life – if I could turn the clock back, I would!” That’s good enough reason to watch, isn’t it?
Banzai
Who didn’t play along to this at home? For those that don’t remember, Banzai was a spoof of Japanese television game shows whereby the contestants, frequently celebrities, were made to partake in ridiculous dares. The viewers at home were then given a few options to pick from in order for them to guess the outcome. For example, one that comes to mind is the episode where Harold Bishop from Neighbours went knock-a-door running and you had to bet how long it would take for someone to answer the door. Another classic was seeing how long one of their Japanese interviewers could make a celebrity speak for without saying a word; highly cringey and superbly entertaining.
We love just how audacious and ridiculous television shows can get. We’re not quite show what poor Keith Chegwin was thinking of when he agreed to partake in Naked Jungle but it sounds like he regrets it now! Who wouldn’t? The unfortunate thing for Cheggers is that each of these shows will live long into the future thanks to the invention of YouTube and the ever increasing need for people to see other people – particularly celebrities – in awkward situations.
