What Your Favourite Film Says About You

If you want to know somebody better, ask them what their favourite films are. Everyone will be able to name a few (although a dedicated film buff might start to reel off a list of dozens) and it gives you a surprisingly effective insight into their personality. Here are just a few popular and acclaimed films, and what they might say about you.

It’s A Wonderful Life

What it’s about: Considered one of the most acclaimed films ever made, It’s A Wonderful Life tells the story of George Bailey, a man who has given up his dreams to help others. On the night before Christmas, George is deeply troubled and suicidal, and an angel named Clarence is sent to save him and earn his wings. By showing him how different George’s home town would have been without him, Clarence succeeds in restoring his will to life, reminding him that it is, after all, a wonderful life.

What it says about you: You’re an idealist. Whilst it’s almost universally acknowledged as a fantastic film, it is unrelentingly sentimental, and presents a rather simplistic and optimistic view of one person’s impact on the world. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most popular films of all time, and a must-see at Christmas.

Star Wars

What it’s about: Because it’s an epic space opera, Star Wars is surprisingly difficult to summarise; then again, if you don’t know the story at all, you’ve probably been hiding under a rock for most of the last forty years. Princess Leia, leader of the Rebel Alliance, is captured by the evil Darth Vader, but sends a message to Obi Wan Kenobi for help. He brings farmboy Luke Skywalker with him, hiring the rogueish Han Solo along the way, they rescue the princess and together they conspire to destroy the Galactic Empire’s planet destroying space station, the Death Star.
What it says about you: We’re sticking here to the original film and perhaps its two sequels – the later prequel films gained mixed reviews and as such reflect slightly differently on their fans. However, at the heart of all Star Wars films is escapism – as with most science fiction and fantasy films, their fans are looking for a way to escape the humdrum of normal day to day life and vicariously experience adventure, romance and excitement. Fans of Star Wars are often regarded as somewhat obsessive – but they are also often optimistic and as loyal to their friends as R2-D2.

Jurassic Park

What it’s about: Three specialists – a palaeontologist, a paleobotanist and a chaos theorist – are brought to the titular theme park by its creator John Hammond, and are surprised to find that the main attractions are real, live dinosaurs. The fears they express are first dismissed, then realised as the park’s power is shut down by a treacherous employee, leaving the dinosaurs free to roam.

What it says about you: You probably like dinosaurs a lot; on a more serious note, you may also be quite concerned with the dangers of interfering with nature. Jurassic Park can be seen as an allegory for conservationism, or a warning against “science gone mad” as the park’s creator ignores warnings from the specialists he’s brought in, believing he can control nature.

Frozen

What it’s about: Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen, it tells the tale of two sisters, Anna and Elsa. When Elsa’s magical ice powers plunge the kingdom into eternal winter, plucky Anna sets off on an epic journey to save both her sister and the kingdom, accompanied by ice harvester Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and an animated snowman called Olaf.

What it says about you: You may well be a six year old. Although Frozen has delighted audiences of all ages, it has created something of an obsession amongst many young children, leading to daily singalongs and the despair of many a parent who wishes they really would “Let it Go” – at least for a while! It has, however, also received critical acclaim from adult audiences, especially from women who appreciate the fact that Disney has produced two strong female characters who can succeed on their own merits.
