If you haven’t checked out our recent blog about the battle between 4K televisions and 1080p televisions, then let us quickly fill you in. You may think that the name means that these televisions deliver 4,000 pixels – but that’s actually just the width. In fact, they can display an astounding 8 million pixels, which is four times as many as you’ll get using a 1080p TV.
All of this translates into sharper images, however a lot of consumers have been complaining that they just can’t see the difference. Well, the upcoming 8K TV could be positioned to change all that.
A New Era
There’s no denying that we’ve already entered the new era of television design, with technology constantly pushing the limits to do what was once considered impossible. However, when 8K comes along it promises to deliver 16 times as many pixels as a HD television. That’s right, the same HD televisions which were only recently at the forefront of the TV technology battle will soon be relegated to the bottom of the pile, under the mammoth which will be 8K.
The Masterminds Behind 8K
At the moment, this impressive new technology is being most actively pursued by the Japanese broadcasters NHK, and Dr Keiichi Kubota, the Executive DG of Engineering has been happy to explain exactly how groundbreaking he feels this tech advancement really is, stating that: “cultures once believed that a camera could capture the soul in an image. 8K actually does.”
NHK have skipped the 4K revolution entirely, preferring to focus on bigger and better things. They feel, perhaps understandably, that with their 8K vision coming over the horizon there is no need to focus on a time-consuming and costly upgrade when their will be yet another new technology to take its place in not too long.
But will others follow suit? At the moment it’s too early to tell, and we’re certainly a little way off from seeing 8K televisions actually lining all the shelves, but with other broadcasters including our very own BBC expressing interest and even trialling the technology way back in 2012 for the Olympic games, it seems like we may already be taking yet another gigantic leap into the future.
In the meantime, there are plenty of other televisions offering all the pixels you need to watch the latest blockbuster movie, and for smart TV deals you’ve come to the right place!
